Eco-friendly tale is the fairest of them all: Epic will appeal to adults and children alike

*

Both the grown-up comedies this week are infantile. It’s the children’s film that is more calculated to appeal to discerning adults.

Aimed at children between the age of nine and 14, Epic is a pleasant diversion rather than an animated Ben Hur. It’s the latest from director Chris Wedge, who made Ice Age, and beneath the trappings of a modern 3D animated action film it’s a fairly conventional fairy tale.

The central plot involves good leafmen (led by Colin Farrell and Beyonce Knowles) fighting off bad boggans who spread canker and mould throughout their Avatar-influenced forest.

The hero and heroine are, unsurprisingly, a couple of rebellious teenagers: one a leafboy (Josh Hutcherson), the other a human called M.?K. (the ubiquitous Amanda Seyfried), who doesn’t believe in fairies until she’s fallen for one.

Grown-ups who have been around the block a few times before with eco-friendly cartoons such as Once Upon A Forest may notice that, for an action adventure, Epic has an awfully unadventurous script.

All the same, this is an amiable way to spend 102 minutes. The quality of the animation is exceptional, and will open many eyes — young and old — to the beauty of natural woodland.
Multiple Oscar-winner Christoph Waltz is slyly amusing as the leader of the boggans.

And there’s comic relief, too, thanks to Chris O’Dowd and Aziz Ansari as a slug and snail who wish they could be leafmen but know their place, which is bringing liquid refreshment to a thirsty pod that may or may not give birth to a fairy princess.

‘Moist is what we do,’ they sigh, which in a week like this comes across as the height of dry wit.
