For "Star Trek" fans, the greatest adventure is what lies ahead.
We've all been waiting a very long time for a glimpse at some footage -- any kind of footage -- from the highly anticipated "Star Trek" sequel, "Star Trek Into Darkness." And now, we're finally about to get some ... big time.
Who needs a trailer when you can watch the entire beginning of the movie? The worlds of Gene Roddenberry and J.R.R. Tolkien are on a collision course as the first nine minutes of the new "Star Trek" adventure will be unveiled before IMAX 3D screenings of "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey."
Paramount is following in the footsteps of Warner Bros., as around this time last year the first scene from WB's "The Dark Knight Rises" was screened before IMAX presentations of Paramount's own "Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol." That inter-studio collaboration helped increase IMAX ticket sales of the Tom Cruise action film and got fans even more excited for Batman's final round under director Christopher Nolan's watch.
Now, the studios have switched positions as Paramount has attached its extended teaser to a Warner Bros. feature. Both "Star Trek Into Darkness" and "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" are massive blockbusters in the waiting, though audiences are especially clamoring for a look at director J.J. Abrams' ultra-secretive follow-up to 2009's "Star Trek," which resurrected the dying franchise with a bold new vision (and a hot young cast).
"Star Trek Into Darkness" features Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban, Simon Pegg, John Cho and Anton Yelchin all reprising their original roles as the crew members of the Enterprise, though all eyes are on "Sherlock" star Benedict Cumberbatch, who will be appearing as the currently unrevealed villain (though rumor hath it that he's Khan). The "Star Trek" sequel will boldly go into next year's summer movie season when it opens on May 17, 2013.
"The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" will hit theaters -- on IMAX screens and otherwise -- on December 14.
